Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV
A year ago I began a thankfulness journal and kept it handy throughout the day. What made me smile? What was lovely? It surprised me how often I found joy even on difficult days.
Giving thanks, it turned out, brought me to a happy place. When I wrote down something that I was thankful for it was like capturing a butterfly, and it opened a door of fellowship with God.
When I reached 1,000 entries my life had become busy and the journal fell by the wayside. It remained there for some time as a quiet legacy of God’s kindness to me.
The other day I cleaned up the piles on my desk and found it. I read a few of the entries, smiled, thumbed to a fresh page and wrote:
1,001. My children playing happily together.
1,002. The dog basking on the sunny porch.
1,003. A kind word from my boss.
Pouring out troubles on paper might unburden us and lead to prayer. HOWEVER, an exclusive diet of this can sour the soul. Have you learned to write out your thanks to God and capture the joys of the day?
